Why the people closest to you can't always help

Loyalty is a good thing in a friend, but it makes for a one-sided read. If a friend has heard only your version for months, their advice reflects that. Family may carry history with your partner that has nothing to do with the question in front of you.

What a useful outside view looks like

• They ask questions before they offer opinions.

• They don't know the other person and have nothing to gain from what you decide.

• They'll tell you something you don't want to hear, kindly.

• They don't decide for you.

• What exactly is the decision or conversation I'm facing?

• What do I keep explaining away?

• What would I advise a friend in the same spot?

• What would a good outcome look like, for both of us?
